Cape Town: Digital Nomad Capital of Africa

TAG Travel - Better Business Travel Management

Recent survey (IOL) shows Cape Town among the list of top cities for remote work and Cape Town is listed as the digital nomad capital of Africa.

In February, The Western Cape MEC of Finance & Economic Opportunities David Maynier requested SA to introduce a remote working visa. Maynier presented his request to the then Minister of Tourism Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane & the Minister of Home Affairs Aaron Motsoaledi. He said digital nomad tourists were an important market as they were more resilient to the challenges of the pandemic.

When Western Cape Premier Alan Winde delivered his State of the Province (Sopa) in February, he announced plans to lobby the government to offer remote working visas to tourists. Winde said the visa would be a significant contribution to the recovery of the tourism sector in South Africa.

List of countries offering digital nomad visas are:
Mexico
Australia
United Arab Emirates
Portugal
Iceland
Croatia
Estonia
Greece

Those that have announced legislation include:
Bali
Thailand
Colombia

In this pandemic climate, tourism has bourne the brunt of the many lockdown restrictions & rules resulting in an economic crisis for numerous countries.
Granting digital nomad visas may just be a solution and a very needed welcome to the battered economy and a sound way to attract foreign-employed workers.

Together we reset, rebuild travel and reconnect safely.
